- FWIW the Sportster does not use any Rockwell parts (at least not
- any of the 28.8 models, the 14.4 Sportster Si does, but I digress).

- The so-called "Spiral Death Syndrome" did exist, but was fixed in
- the hardware of Sportsters back in late '94 and fixed in software (for
- previous modems) with teh 04/18/95 firmware. Since that time another
- firmware has been released for these Sportsters (dated 08/29/95, it adds
- 33.6 support and costs $25), and all new Sportsters that have been
- shipping since late '95 have been based on a completely different hardware
- design. Basically chances are that you don't have this problem unless
- you've got a really old Sportster and haven't gotten a firmware upgrade
- since you bought it. To check you're firmware date, type ATI7.

- Well, that pretty much narrows the problem down to being a
- software one and not a hardware one.

-
- Well, first check that they're configured for hardware flow
- control ONLY. Both your modem and software can usuable be configured to
- use both hardware and software flow control, which will cause problems.
- Next, make sure you have autobaud turned OFF or locked baud turned ON in
- both modem and software. For your modem actually, just try using AT&F1 to
- use all the factory default settings. If it stil doesn't work, check to
- make sure you're not getting any sort of com port or IRQ conflicts or
- anything like that.
